...what the person is saying when they answer that question with a "yes". The person knows they were mistaken for a non-white person by a white person BECAUSE they were mistreated on the basis of color.

The question I ask is "Have you ever been mistaken for a non-white person by a person that is classified as white?".

Non-white people KNOW what it means to be non-white. It means you have been and/or will be mistreated on the basis of color. Non-white people know when white people are mistreating them on the basis of color.

I only ask this question if the person is having difficulty with determining if they are white. A "yes", in answer to the question, tells me that the person has been mistreated on the basis of color, meaning the person is non-white. A "no" tells me that the person has never been mistreated on the basis of color, meaning the person is white.
